Rialto Eco Remodel – Dublin 2009

Welcome to the Earth Balance Interiors Interior Design Portfolio Residential. This part of the website looks at a residential remodel using sustainability, salvage, recycling, waste reduction, non toxic decorating and daylighting as key eco home design concepts.

Scroll down to find out more about the Rialto eco renovation project.

Original Home

Constraints

• Lack of natural daylight
• Heat loss & draughts from open plan ground floor lounge/kitchen/stairs
• No insulation
• Reception room is a dump zone – never used
• No dining room
• Straight line from front door to garden – layout does not encourage ‘living’
• Occupants never use the lounge during the day as too dark & oppressive
• Kitchen is bare and feels disjointed from home

Design Solution

General Considerations

• Under floor board netting fixed to timber & 100% natural sheeps wool insulation laid on top
• Insulating wall liner on the interior of external walls
• Replaced single pane windows with double glazing
• 2 x roof lights/sky tubes in old kitchen through onto flat roof above
• Move lounge to where most light is at the rear of home
• Create single spaces for heat retention & draught reduction; dining room, lounge, kitchen, hallway
• Position dining room in darker area, as the least frequently used room
• Use recycled glass blocks walls to bring in as much natural daylight into the dining room as possible
• All doors replaced with salvaged frames, opaque/clear glass panels for maximum light
• All second hand & salvaged timber (furniture, flooring, picture frames, doors) stripped down with natural abrasive strippers and finished with natural hardwearing clear Polyx (hard wax) oil
• Ironmongery reclaim and factory seconds
• Non toxic caulk
• Improve air quality with plants that absorb VOCs
• Create living light in the interior with multiple light sources & plants near light sources
• Any waste solid timber re-purposed into picture frames
• Walls & ceilings painted with Auro paint
• Sofa and chairs given away on freecycle network

Dining Room & Hall

• Floor to ceiling recycled glass blocks on stair wall & lounge wall
• Create two natural day light sources;
1. Source from lounge roof lights, window and patio doors from 10am-4pm
2. Source from upstairs landing window which floods stairs from 3.30pm till dusk
• Strip back to original floor boards. Damaged boards replaced with salvage
• Old fire surround donated to a good home on freecycle network
• Behind the glass blocks is a diffused light source using CFL bulbs & rice paper lantern for ambient evening illumination
• Filled in chimney recess with partition board & built in shelves
• Table linen, wall hang & chair cushion covers made from 100% organic cotton ‘Japanese larch’ design
• Pendant; Frank Gehry ‘Cloud’ design. Occupant already had, made from plastic
• Natural rice paper lanterns with CFL bulbs
• Recessed downlighters; 9 Watt CFL lamp in a GU10 lamp holder
• Dimmer function on conventional switch
• Additional dining chairs, rectangle dining room table, credenza sourced second hand
• Opposing chimney wall & hallway filled with differing sized picture frames; reclaim, salvage, re-purposed and charity shop finds

Lounge

• Cork flooring for warmth underfoot; laid in a herringbone pattern, velvet colour
• Glass panelled sliding door for lounge to maximise space and light
• Salvage/second hand table, chairs, timber sideboards, cupboards, drawers
• Second hand sofas – refurbished/reupholstered
• Window & patio door – FSC natural timber slated blind
• Upholstery 100% organic cotton ‘green rush & pine’ design
• 2 large 1930s mirrors
• Recycled plastic table and floor lamp shades using CFL bulbs

Kitchen

• Kitchen was located in this room prior to the first remodel
• Reused old kitchen units, sourced extra carcases on recycling network and bought additional units to extend kitchen space
• Natural cork flooring with a hard wax finish to ensure moisture repellent
• LED strip lights below kitchen wall units
• Recessed downlighters; 9 Watt CFL lamp in a GU10 lamp holder
• Dimmer function on conventional switch
• Window treatment – FSC natural timber slated blind
• Worktop bought new, made out of engineered laminated bamboo
• 150mm upstand – salvaged tiles
• Second hand table & chairs
