Interior design home office

Eco ideas - Part 1

This is my interior design home office article. If you are thinking of redesigning your home office or are about to start working from home then the next two pages are ideal for you. You can make environmental and eco friendly choices in the office area of your home too.

Look for second hand home office furniture Home office style
Think about the style of furniture when you are designing your home office. Aim to buy products that are functional and will not go out of fashion, so that you use them for their entire lifespan. Practical storage is a must! It is important to store everything in place so that your surroundings are not cluttered and unorganised – which will only cause you stress. This is especially true if you spend a lot of time in your home office, as you will need to create an environment that is comfortable, promotes productivity, efficiency and yet is as stress free as possible. Every single element within your home office from colour scheme to filing systems will have an effect on your wellbeing.

Second hand office furniture
Second hand office furniture is in abundance as so many companies are upgrading their furniture and throwing away their old pieces. It is rare that a company will repair and reuse any furniture they have. Search through your local business directories to find office furniture salvage companies. This is a much cheaper option for your home office, saves the demand on new production and saves furniture being thrown into landfill sites. When you no longer want the office furniture you have, remember to put it back into the recycling loop or donate it to a local charity or school.

Eco materials for office furniture
Consider home office furniture that is made with recycled content materials or is made from environmentally friendly materials. Examples could be; wheat board, sustainable timber, recycled aluminium, recycled glass, locally found materials, recycled plastic or organic upholstery etc. View over my eco materials articles for an in-depth analysis of types available.

Eco home office Self assembly office furniture
How does this benefit the environment? The assembly process during manufacture generally uses large amounts of energy with specialised automated machinery. If you eliminate this part of the production process, and ask the customer to build their product from flat pack it saves the demand on precious energy resources. It also saves on packaging and waste.

Timber as a furniture material
Avoid metal and plastic when specifying office furniture material. Source locally produced certified sustainable timber or timber products to bring a natural, warm and renewable finish to your home office.
