Environmental Building Design
The construction industry plays a large role in the ongoing damage to our surrounding natural environment. With more housing in demand and a growing interest in mass production, the construction process from planning through to demoliton, all has an influence on our surrounding ecosystems and the health or our land, air and water. Including sustainability in the construction industry needs a change in mindset and approach.
Some examples of damaging construction factors:
- Extraction of raw materials such as mining/quarrying
- Non renewable resources
- Chemical processing
- Mass production
- Packaging
- Destruction of trees and greenland to clear paths for site access
- Shipping from overseas
- Transportation of heavy materials to site
- Construction methods
- Building maintenance, especially energy use
- Disposal and demolition
It is imperative that each member of the building industry takes responsibility for their own actions. Intelligent design means to design with critical thinking of the consequences caused through action and method.
Environmentally friendly construction methods, materials and resources need to be used as standard during the entire building process. Emissions, pollution and waste need to be reduced across the industry with an increase in design for reuse, remanufacture and recycling.
