Eco kitchen flooring

Greening your kitchen - Part 3

My eco kitchen flooring recommendations are:

Linoleum
All natural flooring choice in tile or sheet from. Made with renewable and biodegradable resources; linseed oil, flax, jute and natural pigments. A warm, comfortable and sound / impact absorbent flooring choice – perfect underfoot when standing in the kitchen for a few hours. Natural elements create low levels of natural VOCs – however incomparable to the high levels found in vinyl alternatives.

Cork tiles
A warm, comfortable and sound / impact absorbent eco kitchen flooring choice – perfect underfoot when standing for a few hours. Cork is a lightweight tree bark collected during harvest and is a natural, renewable and abundant resource. Great for the kitchen with excellent resistance to mildew and mould – working well in humid environments.

Bamboo (see also kitchen worktop description)
Not as warm or soft underfoot as the above two choices, however a highly sustainable and durable material with a unique grain and beauty. Easy to clean and maintain.

Reclaimed Wood
Visit your local salvage yard to source reclaimed timber flooring planks which you can then sand and finish with eco / natural timber treatments. Often reclaimed timber is hardwood timber like oak, yet without the necessity of felling hardwood trees that take centuries to grow. Typically these hardwoods are beautiful in appearance with added characteristics of aging.

Recycled rubber
Flooring tiles and sheeting made from up to 100% recycled post consumer rubber content (tires and other rubber products) which would be thrown into landfill sites if not recycled. A warm, comfortable and sound / impact absorbent flooring choice - perfect underfoot when standing in the kitchen for a few hours. The flooring has excellent water resistance and slip resistance properties. A very low maintenance and durable option. Remanufacturing can use water based binding agents. The original rubber material contains chemical and toxic additives which create VOC emissions.

Eco kitchen backsplash & upstands

Recycled glass backsplash - simply wipe clean! My kitchen backsplash and upstand recommendations are:
Recycled metal tiles
These tiles are made from recycled steel, aluminium and brass. Typically quite an expensive tile choice, however suitable for small areas like upstands and backsplashes.

Recycled glass tiles
These tiles can really make a statement to the underside of your kitchen cabinets whilst providing an easy to clean surface.
