Eco bed linen
Eco sheets, duvet covers & pillow cases
When sourcing eco bed linen and in particular bed sheets, opt for elastic-free corners and buy the traditional flat sheets that you fold under the mattress to avoid synthetic elastics. Opt for natural colourings rather than any dyed choices.
Cotton
Ideally search for organic, uncoloured and unbleached 100% cotton sheets and bed linen. The next alternative would be green cotton that is not organic, but hasn’t been dyed or bleached. Avoid conventional cotton bed linen and cotton/polyester blends as they have been treated with a multitude of chemicals; chlorine, stay press, moisture resistance, stain resistance etc.
Bamboo
Bamboo fibre is available as bed linen with 100% content or as a fibre blend with cotton. The advantages of bamboo are the sustainable and abundant characteristics of the material. Source organic bamboo where possible, as this is odour free and manufactured without any chemicals – holding great anti microbial and anti allergen properties. However, as with all products that originate from overseas, high levels of embodied energy are created with transportation and distribution.
Hemp
100% natural hemp is another good eco alternative fibre for bed linen that is a highly breathable fabric. Certified organic hemp is available that is farmed without pesticides and fertilisers or with any chemical additives, colourings or treatments during the manufacturing process.
Silk
100% pure organic silk bed sheets are a natural, breathable and ever so soft choice. Silk holds excellent anti allergy properties, however any dyes used may contain chemical additives. Look for vegetables dyes and silk fibres which have been cleaned without chemicals during manufacturing.
Cushions
Eiderdown and feather filled cushions are a healthy choice. Look for cushion covers that are made from organic textiles like cotton. Choose unbleached and natural colourings to avoid chemical dyes and treatments.
Blankets
Look for organic cotton and 100% certified organic thermal blankets. There are some textile mixes available such as cotton, flannel and sateen. Traditionally woollen blankets are not only 100% natural, but great insulators and have excellent moisture and temperature regulating properties. Certified organic fibres are the ideal when buying blankets.
Upholstery
From your window seat, dressing table chair to your headboard, you will find a good amount of upholstered items of furniture. Upholstery material itself should be natural and where possible organic such as cotton, wool, coconut fibre and sisal. Avoid synthetic chemical foam filled items and opt for natural latex as an alternative. Plastic textile coverings like PVC, leather look fabrics should also be avoided to reduce synthetics and chemicals in your home.
As a last note, when buying eco bed linen always make sure that the product is certified by organic associations.
